| Benjamin Disraeli was born in 1804. Although baptised as an Anglican at the age of 13, he was of Jewish parentage and remains to this day the only British Prime Minister to be of Jewish extraction.
Disraeli was a well-known social and literary figure before he began his political career. His most famous literary works include Sybil and Vivian Grey, although he produced many works of both fiction and non-fiction.
Notwithstanding his literary achievements, it is nonetheless as a politician that Benjamin Disraeli is best remembered. A great friend of Queen Victoria, his staunchest political adversary was William Gladstone, the leader of the Liberal Party, whom he both preceded and was succeeded by as British Prime Minister. His considerable political career spanned nearly four decades.
Benjamin Disraeli was raised to the peerage as the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield in 1876. He died in 1881. |
